Speaking during the International Youth Day forum at Masinde Muliro University, the head of state unveiled the Nyota Programme, which is meant to train the youth who are Form 4 graduates and equip them with the skills required in the job market.

He stated that the Kenya Kwanza government is looking for 90,000 Kenyans to enrol in phase one while paying them a stipend.

The head of state said that the training programme would last for one year. He further called on the youth to enrol on the programme.

Did Ruto encounter network challenges?

He mentioned a USSD code that interested youth would use to apply, only for him to be told that the network had been jammed.

"Enda hapo kwa *254#. Enda kwa Nyota. Ooh there's no network here today? I think there are my people here with a habit of shutting down the network. Where are those people?" Ruto questioned.

Immediately, he raised concerns, the network was back, and people could now gain access to the training programmes through the code shared.

"Is it back? Do we understand each other? Is it back? Very good," Ruto said.

In a bid to advocate for the programme, Ruto said that 180,000 have already applied for the programme.

However, he asserted that there are still opportunities for more youth to apply to the programme.

"These 90,000 people have no skills. These are young people between the ages of 18 and 29 years. If you are disabled or marginalised, up to 35 years old. We want to equip you with skills. You are going to work under a master craft. We are going to equip you with skills if you have no skills."
"We are going to make sure that you can go home and come back every day by paying for your going home and coming back for six months. We will bring NITA to come and assess you. Then we will give you a certificate that you have been certified in this or that or th other skill. We are then going to give you another six months of apprenticeship and assign you to a job where you can learn as you work," Ruto said.
