On Tuesday, August 12, Javin Oyoo joined other youth from across the country for the fête presided over by the president.

It was during his chance to address the president in a question-and-answer session that he seized the moment to open up to the president.

Oyoo started with a caution to the president as he seeks reelection.

"If you don't listen to what the voter wants, then in 2027, you might listen to the returning officer. I'm saying this boldly as a believer of kumi bila break. So don't spoil our appetite; make sure you do what the voters want, so that we'll celebrate you in 2027," said Oyoo.

Christening himself the "dean of students", Oyoo embarked on enumerating the challenges the youth are facing, and particularly speaking for the scholars suffering in the tertiary institutions.

He singled out the issue of food shortage and how students are struggling to afford their meals.

Just like the fees and food subsidy the government is undertaking in the public primary and secondary schools, Oyoo pleaded with the president to extend it to the tertiary institutions.

"Mimi kama the dean of comrades. Sisi tunahona umempawa sana watu wa secondary unawapea free food primary hapo Nairobi. Unathani sisi comrades tumeshiba. Bwana president, we are tired of dying in silence. Do something to the comrades across different universities. We are also starving," he said.

At the same time, Oyoo warned Ruto that those serving him were failing his regime.

If he doesn't take action, then they will cost him in 2027.

The student observed that Ruto might be having a plausible agenda for the country, but those charged with actualising it are sleeping on the job.

The young man asked the president to read the riot act to those failing his agenda.

"Mr President, in Kenya, we are doing a lot of things for formality. We come, we sit, we talk, you articulate a lot of things, but now the problem is those people you have assigned to you. Mr President, people are saying that you plan a lot, but your people are failing you. Summon them to your office and tell them what they ought to do," Oyoo counselled the president.

Oyoo also petitioned the president to free funds for youth-led organisations.

He noted that there is a lot of overreliance on grants and aid and foreigners, yet the government has a lot of money being expended on other causes.

Oyoo said relying on foreign donours was presenting a bad spectacle for a capable government like Kenya's.

"We are having a youth-driven organisation across Kenya. And we are still depending on grants and funds from other countries and overseas. Yet the government has a lot of money. We are also pleading that we can have a platform where youth-led organisations can apply for grants from the Kenyan government. Wazungu, wacha kuni, wacha nyonge na president," he said.
