Nairobi: Political blogger and close ally of former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, Gilbert Kiptalam, popularly known as GK Malema, has claimed that his life is in danger following an alleged attempted abduction in Nairobi on Sunday, August 10.

Speaking exclusively to TUKO.co.ke, Malema said the incident occurred at around 2am while he and his friend were travelling from Nairobi to Baringo county for a funeral.

He alleged that a group of six men, riding on three motorbikes, set up a roadblock using spike strips near the Westlands roundabout along Waiyaki Way.

“I was following a bus. As soon as it passed, they threw spikes at us while shouting ‘ndiyo huyu’ (this is the one). They wanted to abduct me,” Malema claimed.

According to him, the suspects — dressed in civilian clothes, some in shorts — pursued him on motorbikes after his car’s tyres were punctured.

They followed him to the Shell Petrol Station opposite Safaricom House, where they identified themselves as police officers and demanded to know why he had not stopped.

"How could the police be checking traffic in the dead of the night in shorts?" he wondered.

Malema said they were repelled by security guards at the station and members of the public who had gathered.

Is GK Malema targeted politically?

He alleged that he is being targeted for his political views, being a vocal critic of President William Ruto’s administration.

"I thank God the commotion attracted security guards and they intervened, making the would-be attackers flee. But now my life is in danger. I have reported the case and handed over raw video footage to the authorities,” he said.

The bogger added that he had identified the individuals involved in the incident and shared a video of the nighttime moment.

The matter was reported at Kilimani Police Station under OB number 58/12/08/25.

Did police lob tear gas at Gachagua's allies?

In other news, chaos erupted during an engagement rally in Gilgil, Nakuru, when Gachagua's allies were teargassed as Nyandarua senator John Methu addressed the crowd.

A video captured the crowd chanting the 'Wantam' slogan before scattering as the police lobbed tear gas canisters.

An altercation ensued between officers and residents, with some locals throwing stones at police. One person was seen nursing a leg injury.

In a reaction statement, Gachagua accused Ruto’s administration of using intimidation and suppression, likening the approach to a slide toward dictatorship.

He vowed that, despite the alleged harassment, his team’s 'resilience and commitment' would remain strong.
