Raila Odinga's Close Allies Vow to Remain in Broad-Based Govt: "Kwa Ruto Hatutoki"

  • William Ruto seems to have found favour in the Luo Nyanza region, perhaps compensating for the losses he might have suffered in terms of support in regions like Mt Kenya
  • Nyanza leaders have pledged their allegiance to the president, promising to remain in his fold even past the next vote
  • The region is among the bastions whose support veteran politician Raila Odinga has leveraged for decades

Led by National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi, the politicians laud the president for uniting the country.

“President Ruto, you have shown us a different friendship. I’m not saying this because I am the treasury CS. I say this because I can see the way you relate to everyone in this country. Kenyans have been seeing how you love everyone equally. I want to tell my people that we are going nowhere,” Mbadi said.

Has Ruto's regime benefited Migori?

On his part, Suna East MP Junet Mohamed attributed the development in the region to Ruto's regime.

The MP said that counties like Migori had never been developed until Ruto's regime came in.

The last time development was seen there was during the colonial government, and now in Ruto's administration.

"The only government that has done something in Migori is the colonial and the current regime. We never saw anything in the other administrations," he said.

With the gesture extended by Ruto, Junet, a top-ranking member of the ODM party, said the region had resolved to remain in Ruto's fold in the lead-up to the 2027 vote.

He said the resolution to rally behind Ruto has the blessing of his party leader, Raila.

"I the minority leader in the National Assembly and also a leader in ODM. We sat in the ODM central committee chaired by Raila Odinga, and we have resolved that we are supporting the government. Th resolutions is in the minutes signed by Raila," he said.

Junet said the current partnership between the ODM and UDA parties, epitomised by the broad-based government arrangement, is good for the country's unity and progress.

"We will support the government because we want the country to stabilise and develop," he said.

Why Ruto's reelection in 2027 is important for Kenya

The vocal lawmaker further foresaw the electoral success of Ruto in 2027, saying it would mark a new beginning for Kenya's politics.

He suggested that for decades, certain regions have commandeered over the others, leveraging their numerical strongholds.

Junet said that by Ruto winning his second term, the hegemony of certain regions and groups will have been crushed.

It will be a new political dawn, and every Kenyan will have a sense of belonging regardless of their numbers and ethnic extraction, Junet said.

"As I see it, the 2027 General Election is going to be a form of referendum. It will determine, once and for all, the politics of exclusivity. The politics of entitlement will also end in 2027. Because we want a country when anyone can be a president, including myself," he said.

Indicating a political tram that has since left the station carrying the Raila and Ruto bandwagons, Junet divulged that there would be a joint parliament group meeting bringing together lawmakers from ODM and UDA next Monday, August 18.

Why Raila supports Ruto's reelection

Junet's pronouncements mirror the commitment by the ODM leader to working with Ruto.

A few weeks back, Raila was categorical that he didn't intend to leave the broad-based government despite pressure from some of his allies.

Raila, while defending his decisions to work with the government, said he could not have stuck with the opposition when the country was on a precipice following the revolt engineered by the youth.

He said he came on board to stabilise the country.
