On Monday, August 18, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi convened a special sitting for the senators to consider the impeachment motion against Mutai.
How many MCAs voted to impeach Erick Mutai?
An impeachment motion sponsored by MCA Kiprotich Rogony accused the county boss of abuse of office, constitutional violations, biased appointments, and misappropriation of funds.
Following eight hours of debate, 33 of the 47 ward representatives voted to impeach Mutai. Speaker Patrick Mutai's announcement of the results triggered chaos in the chamber.
When will the Senate sit to process Erick Mutai's impeachment motion?
Through a Gazette Notice, Kingi invited senators for a special sitting on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, to hear the charges against the Kericho governor.
Kingi stated that he had received a letter from the County Assembly of Kericho on the removal from office by impeachment of Mutai.
"Pursuant to Section 33(1) of the Senate Standing Orders, on the request of the Senate Majority Leader with the support of the requisite number of senators and further upon receipt of a letter from the Speaker of the County Assembly of Kericho dated August 15, 2025, informed the Speaker of the Senate of the approval of a motion for the removal from office by impeachment of Erick Kipkoech Mutai, the governor of Kericho county. I have appointed Wednesday, August 20 as a day for a special sitting of the Senate," the gazette notice read.
Why was Erick Mutai impeached?
As reported earlier, Rogony in his impeachment motion cited mismanagement and financial impropriety.
The ward representative alleged that between January and July 2023, Kericho taxpayers lost over KSh 85 million through fictitious payments for undelivered goods and inflated costs.
Rogony, a strong critic of the Kericho governor, tabled examples that included KSh 3.9 million for the maintenance of 70 houses in Kipkelion West, KSh 14.9 million for animal feeds that were never supplied, and grossly overpriced items such as KSh 500 sodas and tissue paper bales at KSh 3,250.

How Erick Mutai reacted to his impeachment
Meanwhile, the embattled governor dismissed his impeachment by the Kericho County Assembly MCAs.
Addressing the press on Friday, August 15, Mutai claimed that the voting process was rigged.
According to Mutai, some MCAs had allegedly been given the link to pre-vote ahead of the actual impeachment process.
Mutai claimed the assembly had a rigged system in place, and the results that saw him impeached had already been predetermined.
The Kericho governor wondered why the speaker directed the MCAs to vote electronically instead of a manual count.
