Former Nairobi governor Evans Kidero seems to be quietly preparing for a political comeback, with fresh hints that he could join the 2027 race for City Hall.

Kidero, who was Nairobi’s first governor, lost his seat in 2017 after serving one term.

His tenure was marked by criticism from MCAs, who accused him of poor leadership, indecisiveness, and a lack of development across the wards.

A year later, he faced arrest over abuse of office, bribery, and money laundering allegations—cases that are still in court.

Is Evans Kidero eyeing Nairobi gubernatorial seat?

Despite those troubles, Kidero has not disappeared from public life. In 2022, he vied for the Homa Bay gubernatorial race.

He currently chairs the Kenya National Trading Corporation (KNTC) and has recently been holding a series of meetings with Nairobi leaders.

On Tuesday, August 19, he revealed that he sat down with Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai and Mathare North MCA Oscar Lore to discuss 'the future of Nairobi.'

Previously, Alai posted online that Kidero had been 'misjudged' and should make a comeback.

"Evans Kidero... Misjudged professional. Should make a comeback in Nairobi," he said.

Prior to a meeting with MCAs, Kidero had met Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi, who is himself eyeing the Bungoma governorship.

After their meeting, Kidero wrote;

"Nairobi is home. I had a very productive meeting with Hon. Tim Wanyonyi"

During his time as governor, Kidero pushed projects in road expansion, waste management, and revenue collection.

Supporters credited him with laying some groundwork for Nairobi’s growth, while critics blamed him for financial mismanagement and even the collapse of Mumias Sugar Company, where he served as managing director before entering politics.

Away from politics, Kidero is a trained pharmacist and a University of Nairobi graduate with years of experience in both the corporate and public sectors.

His allies believe this blend of skills makes him uniquely positioned to lead the city again, but he won’t have an easy ride.

Nairobi’s gubernatorial seat has already attracted several contenders.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, businesswoman Agnes Kagure, Kasarani MP James Gakuya, and incumbent governor Johnson Sakaja are all preparing to face off in 2027.

However, it is still unclear whether Kidero will run under ODM, UDA, or even as an independent—given his ties with leaders across both sides of the political divide.
