Makau Mutua Urges Edwin Sifuna to Resign from ODM Secretary General Position: "The Honourable Thing"
- Professor Makau Mutua argues that it is tenable for ODM secretary general Edwin Sifuna to give up the party post and focus on his politics as an individual
- Sifuna has been seeming to pull away from his party, which has resolved to work with President William Ruto's administration
- For that reason, Mutua observed that the Nairobi senator's continued stay in the post was neither serving him nor ODM for the good
Professor Makau Mutua argues that Senator Edwin Sifuna's designation in ODM as the party's secretary general is untenable, and the latter has no choice but to give up the post.

Sifuna has seemed to radically pull away from his party, which has resolved to work with President William Ruto's administration.
Despite his party leader, Raila Odinga's, insistence that ODM will stick to its working arrangement with the Kenya Kwanza regime, Sifuna has held onto his stance against that formation, stating that he would quit the SG post should the party formally announce backing Ruto's re-election in 2027.
Such conflicting stances are what led Mutua to counsel Sifuna to consider leaving the position he holds within ODM.
Mutua, who is President William Ruto's advisor on constitutional matters, suggested that the inconsistencies of Sifuna and ODM's political preferences would not suffice for the former to continue being the party's secretary general.
The party would ultimately reign supreme, he suggested further.
So instead of waiting to be ejected from the position, Sifuna can leave of his own volition, Mutua calling it the "honourable thing."
"My good learned friend and Senator Edwin Sifuna appears to be in an untenable position as SG of @TheODMparty. It seems to me that the honourable thing for him to do if he’s a man of principle is to resign his post, which almost never happens in Kenya, unless one is sacked," Mutua said.
Sifuna was quick with a rebuttal, telling off Mutua.
The firebrand senator appeared undisturbed by the likely ugly political eventuality between him and ODM.
Sifuna wondered why the good professor was worried about the succession within ODM instead of focusing on his duties.
"Omwami (Mutua), you have the unenviable task of determining the value of the lives of the young people your new friends killed and compensating their families. One would imagine that crown to be so heavy as not to allow the wearer time for anything else, let alone worrying about the SG of ODM, who isn’t even your friend," Sifuna fired back.
When will Sifuna leave ODM's SG post
The outspoken lawmaker has been categorical that he would not wish to continue holding the SG post when the top brass of the party deems him unfit to be there.
Meanwhile, he would not quit until the party made it an official position to support Ruto's re-election in 2027
Sifuna believes that ODM stands a high chance of forming the next government, leveraging the unpopularity of the president.
He said he would stay with the hope that Raila changes his mind and decide to try his luck at the presidency once again.
