The situation began when Mutua took to his X account (formerly Twitter) to claim that Sifuna’s position in the Raila Odinga-led party was untenable.
Did Makau Mutua call for Sifuna's resignation?
He suggested that, because of this factor, Sifuna should consider doing what he termed the "honourable" thing and resign from office.

Mutua, however, acknowledged the fact that politicians hardly resign from their positions in political parties.
"My good learned friend and Senator Edwin Sifuna appears to be in an untenable position as SG of The ODM party. It seems to me that the honourable thing for him to do if he’s a man of principle is to resign his post, which rarely happens in Kenya, unless one is sacked," Mutua's statement read.
Edwin Sifuna fires back at Mutua
In response, Sifuna fired back at the lawyer, expressing surprise that Mutua had time to worry about matters affecting the ODM party.
While referencing Mutua's appointment as the Principal Co-ordinator of the State Intervention and Compensation framework for victims of police brutality, Sifuna argued that he should focus on his new role.
"Omwami, you have the unenviable task of determining the value of the lives of the young people your new friends killed and compensating their families. One would imagine that crown to be so heavy as not to allow the wearer time for anything else, let alone worrying about the SG of ODM, who isn’t even your friend," Sifuna stated.
Scenario which Sifuna would resign as ODM SG
Sifuna broke his silence when calls for his resignation as ODM secretary general intensified.
While addressing Kakamega residents on Friday, July 25, Sifuna stated that the only way he could resign from ODM was if his party leader, Raila, asked him to step down.

The vocal politician stated that his role is to work for the people of Kenya and that there was no way he could be a secretary general in a party that does not want him.
He argued that party members who don't understand how he was able to obtain his position do not have the power to tell him to resign.
In a bid to seek approval from Kakamega residents, Sifuna asked them if they wanted him to resign.
The residents declined, urging him to continue with his role.
The Nairobi senator attracted a lot of backlash from a section of ODM members who called him out for constantly speaking against the broad-based government.
