How James and Lakers exited the NBA playoffs

The Lakers had an impressive regular season under first-year coach JJ Redick. They finished third in the Western Conference with 50 wins and 32 losses.

They acquired Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic before the NBA trade deadline in February, but he didn't make a difference against a determined Timberwolves team led by Anthony Edwards.

Wolves won the seven-game series 4-1 and will likely face the Golden State Warriors or the Houston Rockets in the second round.

James turned 40 in December and is still going strong. In the 2024/25 season, he averaged 24.4 points in 70 games. Against the Wolves in the playoffs, he averaged 25.4 points.

After the Lakers lost the series, James was asked about retirement.

"I don't have an answer to that. Something I'll sit down with my family, my wife and my support group and kind of just talk through it and see what happens. And just have a conversation with myself on how long I want to continue to play," he said per ESPN.

James can opt in to his player option worth $52.6 million and return next season by June 29 or become a free agent.
