TUKO.co.ke’s Sports Editor, Martin Moses, has been selected among 27 journalists globally for the World Athletics Media Academy 2025, a programme designed to shape the future of athletics storytelling across journalism, photography and broadcast commentary. Run in partnership with the International Sports Press Association (AIPS),the global body for sports journalists, the programme will see participants receive technical training, attend live events at the iconic National Stadium in Tokyo and produce daily content under the mentorship of global editors and veteran sportswriters.
Martin, who leads the sports desk at TUKO.co.ke, will represent Kenya in this global programme, an opportunity that will culminate in his coverage of the World Athletics Championships, scheduled for 13th–21st September 2025 in Tokyo, Japan. His selection is a reflection of his commitment to insightful, people-centred sports storytelling.
“Covering athletes’ journeys is more than reporting results,” Martin says. “It’s about telling stories of grit, resilience and hope. To be chosen to represent my country on this stage is humbling, but it also reminds me why I started: to give athletes the recognition they deserve.”
World Athletics first took notice of Martin’s work through the AIPS Sport Media Awards, annual awards where they recognise the best sports stories worldwide.Martin had been submitting stories to the competition since 2023 and this year, one of his entries was ranked 10th in Africa.
It was through this international recognition that World Athletics invited him to be part of their new academy for young reporters. Initially, 24 journalists were shortlisted in the journalism category. After a competitive selection process involving tests and assignments over March and April, only 12 finalists were chosen and Martin was the only African journalist in the journalism category in the final group.
The process has been intense. World Athletics made it clear from the beginning—this is not a vacation,” he shares. “They want us to grow, to be challenged and to step out of our comfort zones. I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity, especially at this stage of my career.”

The 12 selected reporters are currently undergoing additional remote training in preparation for the event. They will travel to Tokyo for in-person training beginning 7th September, before reporting live from the Championships.
Martin is no stranger to big stories. The award-winning journalist has authored over 800 sports articles, gaining recognition for his knowledge of both Kenyan and international athletics and his ability to bring heart into every headline.
This global recognition is also a proud moment for TUKO.co.ke. As Kenya’s leading digital news platform, TUKO has consistently invested in humanising stories, spotlighting grassroots talent and amplifying voices that often go unheard. Martin’s journey is a testament to that mission.
“This selection is not just about me,” he says. “It’s about showing young journalists that if you stay curious, stay ethical and keep showing up for your craft, people will notice.”
We’re incredibly proud to see one of our own stepping confidently onto the world stage and we can’t wait to see the stories Martin will bring back.
