Kenyan men and women athletes have broken world records since the 1960s on the biggest stage.

They have set new marks on the road and track, some of which have never been touched for a long time. TUKO.co.ke looks at the world records Kenyan athletes hold as listed on World Athletics.

Faith Kipyegon - 1,500m, Mile

Kipyegon has achieved so much in her career and could be one of the greatest track athletes of all time. She is a triple Olympic champion and four-time world champion. The 30-year-old has broken four world records and holds two of them. She set her latest 1,500m world record on July 5 at the Prefontaine Classic.

Kelvin Kiptum - Men's marathon

The late Kiptum became the first man to run under 2:01 (2:00:35) when he won the Chicago Marathon in October 2023. He shaved 34 seconds off Eliud Kipchoge's world record set in Berlin.

The young athlete died in a tragic car accident in February 2024.

David Rudisha - 800m

Rudisha produced one of the greatest performances on the track at the Olympics and set a world record. He clocked a world record time of 1:40.91 at the 2012 London Olympics to win gold. No athlete has touched that record since.

Beatrice Chebet - 10,000m, 5000m

Chebet won two Olympic gold medals at the Paris Games after breaking the 10,000m at the Prefontaine Classic. She clocked 28:54.14 at the Prefontaine Classic on May 25, 2024, to break Letesenbet Gidey's record.

On the same track on July 5, she broke the 5000m world record and became the first woman to run the distance under 14 minutes. She clocked 13:58.06.

Beatrice Chepkoech - 3,000m steeplechase

Chepkoech has held the women's 3,000m steeplechase world record (8:44.32) since 2018, but an Olympic and world title have eluded her. She failed to land a gold medal at the Olympics, and it appears she will retire by the time the 2028 showpieces come around.
