At the 15 km mark, he said the pace was very slow and he had to speed up, leaving his counterparts behind.
"I pushed in the remaining part of the kilometres and was able to triumph," he added.
He anticipated participating in last year's race, but the management had arranged another race for him.
Kipruto, who trains at Kaptagat, said he had prepared well for this race.
While at the 30 km, Kipruto said he was undecided whether to shift out of the race or not, but when he saw his counterparts were still on course, he braced himself for the best and finally won.
He participated in the Daegu Marathon in January and finished ninth.
"It's a joy for me to win this race. It's a race which has the highest paying marathon in Africa, and it is in my home county, which necessitated my participation," noted Kipruto.
Viola Chepngeno wins women's race
Viola Chepngeno could not hide her joy after winning the race.
She said she used the experience to push for the race, citing that pacemakers played a critical role in her triumph.
"I am a very happy person today after winning this race. I will be embarking on training to prepare myself for other races this year," said Chepngeno.
Sheilah Jebichi, who trains at Kapsait, had prepared well for the race as this is her first race for the year. She came in second after Chepngeno.
"I never expected any win in this race, but was expecting good results," said Jebichii.
The winners in both categories bagged 3.5 million each.
