Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce makes return in Doha

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce competed in her first 100m race since running in the heats at the Paris Olympics, but narrowly missed a top-three spot. It was her first Diamond League race since September 2022 in the Diamond League final in Zurich, Switzerland.

The veteran Jamaican finished fourth behind Tia and Tina Clayton and Amy Hunt of Great Britain. Tia set a world-leading time of 10.92 seconds, while Fraser-Pryce clocked 11.05 seconds.

The Jamaican legend is coming off the 2025 World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou with Jamaica where they finished third behind Great Britain and Spain in the women's 4x100m relays.

The last time she competed in an individual event was at the 2024 Paris Olympics in the heats. She pulled out of the semi-final due to injury. She didn't compete in any individual event.

The five-time 100m world champion was focused on building momentum ahead of a busy season.

"It had been a while since I competed consistently, I'm glad that I finished 4th, I was looking forward to going back and building and coming for the next one. Doha is a great place to be, in 2019 I won my World Championships title here," the veteran sprinter said after the race.

She highlighted how she is navigating being a mother and an athlete.

"The atmosphere was electric, the reception has been wonderful, and I'm so excited to come back again. It is a long season, we just continue to work, and hope for the best. As a mother I have to balance between being a mom and an athlete, and being present at different moments, when you're required to be... And I really just enjoy the moment."

Fraser-Pryce's achievements

The Jamaican sprint legend has been in athletics for nearly 20 years. She broke records, barriers and won everything in athletics.

Some of her accomplishments included two gold medals in the 100m at the Olympics and five 100m global titles.

She is the third fastest woman in history with a personal best of 10.60 seconds behind Elaine Thompson-Herah and the late Florence-Griffith Joyner, per World Athletics.

She is regarded as one of the greatest of all time and will be aiming to end her career with more medals.

Will Fraser-Pryce end her career in 2025?

Earlier, TUKO.co.ke reported that Fraser-Pryce hinted at retiring in 2025 in a cryptic message on social media.

Injuries hampered her 2024 season which she said will be her last but it appears she still has more to offer the world.

It remains to be seen where she will compete next before the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo later this year.
