Former Manchester City and Real Madrid striker Emmanuel Adebayor has reflected on his epic celebration against Arsenal.

It has been over 16 years since that infamous celebration which has made him a hated figure among Arsenal fans.

The Togolese legend is in Kenya to watch Manchester United take on his former team on Sunday.

What is Emmanuel Adebayor celebration?

On September 12 2009, Manchester City welcomed Arsenal for a Premier League clash at the Etihad Stadium.

It was during the early days of Sheikh Mansour, who had bought the club and was looking to make them a major player in the English top flight.

That summer, Adebayor joined Man City alongside Carlos Tevez, Kolo Toure, Joleon Lescott, Roque Santa Cruz, and others.

Adebayor scored an 80th minute goal to give Man City a 3-1 lead. What followed was one of the greatest moments in Premier League history. Man City won that game 4-2.

The former Togo international ran the full length of the pitch to celebrate in front of the Arsenal fans. It was a controversial celebration which saw him get a fine and suspension.

That season he scored in his first four games for Man City but goals dried up after that game. He ended up scoring 14 league goals that season and left after one and a half seasons.

Adebayor revisits epic celebration vs Arsenal

Over the years, the retired striker has given context of why he produced that celebration. On Friday, he explained why he did it.

"I went there I did my job. If you insult me I'm fine. I'm ugly, I don't know how to play football, it doesn't matter. But don't touch my family, especially those who gave me a chance to be Emmanuel Adebayor," he said via Eric Njiru.

"I was being abused by people who six months ago were singing my name. The abuse was for no reason. It wasn’t my fault I left, it was Arsene (Wenger) who wanted to accept the offer for me," Adebayor told Flashscore.

Adebayor spent three and a half seasons at Arsenal and scored 62 goals. He won the African Footballer of the Year award and was named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year, per BBC Sport.

He also played for Real Madrid, Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace and spells in Turkey and Paraguay. He will be hosting a watch party for Manchester United vs Arsenal on Sunday in Nairobi.

Supercomputer predicts Premier League winner
