The second-fiddle European competition is the only realistic avenue to get a trophy this season for the Red Devils and they were well alive to this fact. After a one-all stalemate in the reverse fixture in Spain, Bruno Fernandes turned up grand for his side once again scoring a hat-trick to help them sail through.
The game wasn't as straightforward as it looks with centre referee Benoit Bastien and his VAR forced to work overtime. The French official issued four penalties - three for the hosts and one for the visitors, as well as a direct red card to Jon Aramburu that turned the game on its head.
What Patrick Dorgu told the referee vs Real Sociedad
However, the third penalty for Man United was overturned after Dorgu informed the referee he had made a mistake.
The full-back, who arrived in Manchester in January, went down inside the area after a challenge from Hamadi Traore forcing the referee to point to the spot.
The Dutch defender was, however, spotted telling the referee that Traore had made the first contact with the ball, and therefore, it wasn't a penalty, which was one of the greatest acts of sportsmanship. VAR rescinded the on-field decision for penalty.
Fans praise Patrick Dorgu's sportsmanship
Fans were surprised at the rare exhibition of honesty from the former Lecce defender with Micky Kelly saying,
"Greatest show of sportsmanship in a game that doesn't have a lot of it, well done Dorgu."
Deegan said,
"Fair play Dorgu now don’t ever do this again"
Jack Simmons said,
"Good sportsmanship for owning it, but he blatantly dived and probably knew he wasn’t getting away with it."
While Brady looked at it from a cheeky angle,
"I'm guessing Dorgu said to the ref "You've given us enough ref, it's looking ridiculous at this stage, cop on". Refs sure like giving the bigger clubs every advantage in Europe.

Ruben Amorim: I am proud of Dorgu
Manchester United head coach Amorim was quizzed about the incident in his post-match conference, to which he backed his player.
The former Sporting Lisbon manager also showed some honesty of his own after he frankly stated he wouldn't be as happy with his player if the scoreline was different.
"It is the right thing to do. So I am quite proud of him, but it depends. I cannot say if it is 0-0 or we are losing, if I had the same response! So he did well," he said as captured on Manchester United's website.
Amorim also praised the 20-year-old for settling in quickly to English football.
"He put in a great performance and improved as the game went on. He's learning a lot in that position. He has the physicality and is clearly capable of playing in our league. Overall, it was a good game and a great moment from Dorgu."
What next for Manchester United?
The Red Devils will now face Lyon in the quarter-finals of the competition. The French side beat Romanian side FCSB 7-1 on aggregate to sail through.
The winner of that game will face one of Rangers or Athletic Bilbao in the semi-finals. Rangers eliminated former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho's current team, Fenerbahce.
Jim Ratcliffe slams overpaid underperformers
TUKO.co.ke had earlier reported that Sir Jim Ratcliffe name-dropped some United players, stating they were overpaid yet dropping below-par performances.
The INEOS founder remarked that the Red Devils had inherited several recent signings, including Antony, Casemiro, Andre Onana, Rasmus Højlund, and Jadon Sancho.
