What did Sherringham say to Andre Onana?

Onana stole the headlines for the wrong reasons earlier this month with a poor performance in the Europa League against Lyon.

He was at fault for Lyon's 2 two goals in a 2-2 draw. Man United advanced to the final thanks to Harry Maguire's winner in the second leg.

After the tie, fans concluded that they needed a new keeper to replace the Cameroonian, who has not impressed since he joined in 2023.

Sheringham has told the former Inter Milan goalkeeper to keep quiet at times.

"With Andre Onana, I'm all for the passion, but it's not about what's happened in the past, and it's not about saying what you're going to do, it's all about results and performances on the pitch," he said via MEN.
"You need to shut up at times and just button your lip and just hold your tongue if you can. But I fully understand the pressure these people are under."

Onana has a contract until 2028, and it remains to be seen if Man United will make a decision

What happened to Andre Onana?

Onana joined the club in 2023 to replace club legend David de Gea, but mistakes happened far too often in the first season, especially in the first season.

Fans blamed him for derailing their Champions League season, where they finished bottom of the group behind Bayern Munich, Galatasaray, and Copenhagen.

Late in the 2023/24 season, he improved, and gaffes became rare, but it appears he didn't get rid of them. This season, they have become more conspicuous, and many fans want a new goalkeeper.

Man United boss Ruben Amorim has consistently defended the goalkeeper since he took charge in November. He dropped Onana after his Lyon performance.

"It is a normal thing. Sometimes, you have to push the player to play again, sometimes you have to let him disconnect a little bit."

Amorim defended him after his Lyon errors.

"There’s nothing I can say to André in this moment that will help...It can happen, if you play football, you play a lot of games, you can make mistakes. If you look at the season, I make more mistakes than them during these last games and these last months.”

He will be in goal in the first leg of the semi-final of the Europa League on Thursday, May 1, against Athletic Club.
