The much-talked-about game was held at the Gusii stadium, but not before some unfortunate scenes before the start of the game.

Scores of fans were reported injured after clashes broke out in the stands. Normalcy was later restored with the game starting more than 30 minutes later than it was scheduled to start.

The game itself didn’t take too long for the tensions to boil once again. Austin ‘Lastborn’ Odongo was penalised for elbowing Joshua Onyango and was immediately booked after just three minutes.

Centre referee Israel Mpaima had a difficult time controlling the game as he beseeched the players to cool down their tempers and carry on with the game.

Shabana FC vs Gor Mahia match report

Gor Mahia had the first half chance of the game as Austine Odhiambo curled in one of his trademark free-kicks, but couldn’t pick out a teammate.

Geoffrey Ochieng was then penalised on the other end for bringing down Darius Msagha. Goalkeeper Gad Mathews spilt the ball from the resultant free-kick before coolly picking up the rebound.

Mathews was once again called into action in the 20th minute after Msagha unleashed a ferocious shot from way out, which the goalkeeper parried away.

Reigning league MVP Odhiambo skipped past a couple of challenges in the 40th minute only to fall down and hold the ball, thinking he would get a free-kick, but the decision went against him.

Samuel Onyango then left James Mazembe dazed before his cross was thwarted by Shaban’s captain with Chrispin Ochieng lurking behind him.

The game went into the break goalless.

Both coaches made some changes after the break, with Shabana FC’s Peter Okidi bringing on Marvin Ochieng and Kevin Nyabuto for Keith Imbali and Mark Okolla.

Sinisa Mihic, meanwhile, took off Levin and Chris for Bryson Wangai and Musa Shariff, but the game remained a cagey affair.

Odhiambo was also later hooked off as he struggled to break down Shabana’s resilient defence. It was one of Mihic’s substitutes who finally broke the deadlock.

A corner was swung in from the right, which met an unmarked Slyvester Owino on the other end, who headed it in for the first goal of the contest.

Gor Mahia condemn violent acts in Kisii

In a statement released on Monday, May 5, the recently elected Gor Mahia executive board condemned the attack, placing the blame squarely on FKF.

"It is saddening that despite having registered a legitimate concern with the Leagues and Competitions department of having to play such a High Risk match at Gusii Stadium, they chose not to intervene, even after the security personnel led by the OCPD Kisii Sub County (Nyaribari Chache Constituency) advised that from their assessment, the prevailing environment was volatile and hence there was need to call off the match," read the statement shared on social media.
