The Liverpool star was 28 at the time of his death. He passed away alongside his brother.

The accident reportedly happened around 12.40am local time when his car left the road and caught fire near Palacios de Sanabria.

How did Diogo Jota die?

The footballer was driving alongside his brother, Andre Silva, in the province of Zamora, northwestern Spain, at half past midnight.

The car caught fire after veering off the road after a tire blowout.

The accident comes barely two weeks after his wedding. Jota has three children and has been playing for Liverpool since 2020. He won the Premier League title in 2020 and 2025.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot said he is lost for words.

"What to say? What can anyone say at a time like this when the shock and the pain is so incredibly raw? I wish I had the words but I know I do not," his statement read.

Slot and Jota had just celebrated winning the Premier League title, but now the Dutchman will never see his name on the matchday squad, his face in training, or the dressing room again.

The attacker made 37 appearances last season and scored nine goals to help Slot win the Premier League in his first season.

Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp brought the forward to the club in 2020. He was devastated by his death.

"This is a moment where I struggle! There must be a bigger purpose! But I can’t see it! I’m heartbroken to hear about the passing of Diogo and his brother André. Diogo was not only a fantastic player, but also a great friend, a loving and caring husband and father! We will miss you so much!" Klopp wrote on Instagram.

Ronaldo pays tribute to Diogo Jota

Earlier, TUKO.co.ke reported that Cristiano Ronaldo paid tribute to his international teammate with a touching message.

Ronaldo and Jota played together 32 times for the Portugal national team and recently won the UEFA Nations League.

The Al-Nassr star played against Jota when he was in the Premier League.
