The former Chelsea striker has suffered a serious dip in form in recent seasons, bearing no resemblance to the player who terrorised defences at will five years ago in the Bundesliga.

He recently completed a season-long loan deal at Tottenham, but the English club decided against making the deal permanent.

Werner returned to his parent club, hoping to find his feet again, but as German website BILD reports, he has been told he won't play for them again.

As his contract doesn't expire until next summer, the 29-year-old will need to find a new club.

Timo Werner's career

It has been a hard from from grace for a striker who had the world at his feet in 2020.

He has just plundered 28 goals in the Bundesliga, with only Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski outscoring him.

Chelsea bought him in a KSh 8.6 billion deal for a five-year contract.

Despite endearing himself to the fanbase in West London with his constant work rate and never-tiring attitude, it was his high-profile misses that eventually saw Chelsea cut their losses and send him back to Leipzig.

After another season back in Germany, he was loaned to Tottenham but failed to convince Ange Postecoglou to give him regular minutes.

Postecoglou, who has since been sacked, brutally criticised Werner in January at the end of a Europa League game against Rangers.

"When you've got 18-year-olds, that performance is not acceptable to me. I said that to Timo, he's a German international. I need everyone to at least be going out there and trying to give the best of themselves. His performance in the first half wasn't acceptable," said the agitated Greek-Australian tactician as captured by BBC Sports.

Timo Werner's goals across different clubs

His most prolific stint obviously came in Germany, where he scored 113 times and provided 47 assists in 213 appearances for RB Leipzig.

At Chelsea, he failed to replicate those numbers, scoring only 23 times in 89 appearances in England. He also set up 21 goals.

His return to Tottenham wasn't successful either, as he only scored three times in 41 appearances, as shown by Transfermarkt.

Who did Timo Werner marry?

The need that Leipzig don't want him comes at a time when he only recently said 'I do' to his longtime girlfriend, Paula Lense.

The couple recently tied the knot in Mallorca on a private peninsula. Mail Sport reports that around 100 guests attended the wedding, including his former teammates, Kevin Kampl and David Raum.

"The ceremony was very emotional, especially after waiting so long for this moment. But also the atmosphere was great, and afterwards we were just so happy," they told Vogue Germany.

Which clubs could Timo Werner join?

At the moment, only the New York Red Bulls in the Major League Soccer are in an ideal situation for the former Chelsea man.

The major stumbling block is his KSh 1.56 billion per year salary that he is currently getting and is not willing to give up easily.

It remains to be seen whether the New York Red Bulls will increase their offer.

João Pedro scores twice on first start

Meanwhile, at Chelsea, their new striker João Pedro scored twice on his first start to help his side reach the FIFA Club World Cup semi-finals.

Pedro was only recently brought from Brighton and Hove Albion and immediately justified his price tag with an incredible performance.

The Brazilian will be hoping to be Chelsea's man upfront, with Liam Delap and Nicolas Jackson waiting on the sidelines.
