Tanzania moved closer to reaching the quarter-finals of the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) with a massive win over Mauritania in Group B.

Tanzania vs Mauritania: What happened in first half?

Mauritania started the contest strongly and had a brilliant chance to take the lead with a free-kick. However, they failed to convert.

Tanzania gradually began to assert their influence on the match after a slow start. However, the brilliance they displayed in their opening match against Burkina Faso was notably absent.

The West Africans appeared to be the more adventurous team, although the first half hour was scrappy. Nevertheless, Taifa Stars continued to dominate possession.

In the 37th minute, the hosts found themselves in a dangerous position when Feisal Salum controlled a long ball and set up Clement Mzize, who failed to hit the target.

In the 42nd minute, Shomary Kapombe found himself with some space on the right-hand side. His cross was met by Iddi Seleman, who again couldn't find the target.

In the 44th minute, a defensive error from Tanzania gave Mauritania their best chance of the game. Ahmed Moctar Ahmed aimed for the far post, but Yakoub Suleiman made a brilliant save to deny him.

Taifa Stars started attacking from the first minute of the second half, and like in the first half, they struggled to break through Mauritania's defence.

Despite enjoying plenty of possession (70%), chances were hard to come by for Tanzania. Mauritania did not have a shot for most of the second half.

In the 89th minute, Iddy Nado's superb lofted pass found Shomary Kapombe, who controlled it before firing it past Abderrahmane Sarr to secure all three points for the hosts.

Tanzania will face Madagascar and the Central African Republic (CAR) in their final group matches.

They comfortably beat Burkina Faso on Saturday, August 2, but despite dominating possession, they struggled to create.

“It was a good match. Mauritania played defensively and used long passes, which made things hard for us. But our substitutions were successful. I think it was a tactical game, and we managed to win it," Taifa Stars coach said.
