CHAN 2024: CAF Fines Kenya KSh 6.4m after Major Security Breaches

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has been slapped with another hefty fine following security lapses before and during the Harambee Stars vs. Morocco clash on Sunday, August 10.

Some fans entered the stadium without tickets, prompting CAF to limit ticket sales to 27,000 for Kenya’s clash against Zambia on Sunday, August 17.

Ticketing has reportedly been a major issue, with some accusing unauthorised vendors of hoarding tickets and selling them on-site, leaving fans stranded with invalid ones.

What has CAF fined Kenya?

The incident saw hundreds, possibly thousands, of fans force their way into the stadium to watch Kenya stun Morocco at Kasarani Stadium.

Kenya has already been hit with a KSh 2.5 million fine, and now CAF has handed them another one.

After their investigation, CAF has fined Kenya $50,000 (KSh 6.4 million) and warned that future matches could be relocated to other venues.

"Kenya was warned that continued failure to meet CAF safety and security requirements may lead to the relocation of Kenya’s National Team matches to an alternative venue. Kenya was advised to increase security measures by deploying sufficient personnel within the perimeter of the stadium as well as adhering to the road closures on match days," a CAF statement read.

Kenya face Zambia on Sunday, August 17, and CAF will be watching closely. A point will send them to the quarter-final.

How did Kenya respond to security breaches?

In a related story, TUKO.co.ke reported that the local organising committee responded to CAF reducing the Kasarani capacity.

They urged fans to arrive at the stadium five hours before kickoff, with entry granted only to those holding electronic tickets.

Fan zones will be set up outside the stadium to ensure that fans unable to experience the match inside can still enjoy the atmosphere.
