Did Mediheal Hospital engage in organ trafficking?

In April, the government suspended all organ transplant services at the Mediheal Group of hospitals.

The directive was issued after reports emerged linking the facility to illegal and unscrupulous organ trade, particularly involving kidneys.

Reports alleged young Kenyans, mostly from Western region and Rift Valley, were being lured into selling their kidneys for less than KSh 500,000. The organs were then sold to some foreigners or implanted in patients at extremely high costs.

Some of the victims of the illegal trade who spoke to the press decried adverse side effects after selling their organs.

Some noted that they ended up spending more money on treatment than the compensation they recieved from the transaction.

The government appointed an independent committee to investigate the allegations and file a comprehensive report on the matter.

This came after the initial team assigned to probe the organ trafficking scandal involving the Eldoret-based facility and its branches failed to agree on the findings, and the report they prepared remained inconclusive.
