The tragedy occurred just minutes after the F-7 BGI aircraft took off for a routine training exercise from a nearby airbase.

Brigadier General Mohammad Zahed Kamal, Director General of the Department of Fire Service and Civil Defense, confirmed the casualty figures and led the rescue coordination.

How did Bangladesh jet crash happen?

According to a report by the BBC, the jet, which reportedly suffered a mechanical failure mid-air, plummeted into a two-storey school building in the densely populated Diabari area.

The crash caused a massive explosion and fire, captured in video footage showing thick black smoke billowing from the campus.

The pilot, Flight Lieutenant Md. Taukir Islam, who also perished in the crash, is reported to have attempted to steer the jet away from crowded areas before the impact.

Emergency services, including nine rescue units and six ambulances from multiple fire stations, responded swiftly. The fire was brought under control after an hour.

More than 50 people, including students aged between four and 18, were hospitalised—many with severe burns.

Rescue teams and firefighters continued to sift through the debris in search of survivors as shocked onlookers watched from nearby rooftops.

The government pledged a full investigation.

Interim prime minister Muhammad Yunus expressed deep sorrow, offering condolences to the victims' families and instructing hospitals and emergency services to prioritise the injured.

"This is a moment of deep sorrow for the nation. I wish the injured a speedy recovery," she said.
"The loss suffered by the Air Force, the students, parents, teachers, and staff of Milestone School and College, as well as others affected by this accident, is irreparable. This is a moment of profound pain for the nation. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured and direct all concerned authorities, including hospitals, to address the situation with the utmost priority," state advisor added.

Authorities have promised comprehensive support to those affected, as the country mourns a disaster that struck at the heart of its education system.

In other news, at least five people, including a pregnant woman, died after a packed passenger ship, KM Barcelona V, caught fire in Indonesia.

The vessel, which was carrying over 280 passengers, went up in flames on its upper decks, sparking widespread panic. Dozens of terrified passengers, many wearing life jackets, leapt into the sea in a desperate attempt to escape.

Rescue operations were swiftly launched, with three navy ships dispatched to the scene. Local fishermen also played a key role in saving lives, pulling survivors from the rough waters.
