Ruto made the announcement during the launch of the Affordable Housing Internship Programme on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.
The head of state noted that the programme is part of his administration's commitment to transform the country's economy.
"Transforming a country does not come easy. It takes courage, foresight and commitment. We will keep pushing. Our vision for a better Kenya is irreversible.
"The Affordable Housing Programme showcases the right steps we are taking in making our country prosperous for all," said Ruto.
Who will qualify for affordable housing internships?
The president added that the programme is designed to meet the practical needs of the affordable housing agenda on job creation.
He said the 4,000 interns will be fresh graduates absorbed from the building profession, including architects, surveyors, engineers, construction managers, among others.
The head of state noted that the interns will work in the build environment companies, learning skills required in the market.
"We are bringing on board and hiring another 4,000 graduates, fresh graduates from our universities and TVET to work with us under your firms so that you can supervise them. We are going to work out a framework where you take responsibility for what they do and also make sure that they acquire the skills in the marketplace with your supervision and support so that they can acquire the necessary knowledge, the necessary competencies," said Ruto.
He said the skills acquired will make the youth professionals in their space and future employees in companies.
"These are the people who you will recruit into your firms, these are the people who will create new firms to work with us in this build environment space," he added.
What to know about Affordable Housing Programme
The government launched the Affordable Housing Programme to solve the over 2 million housing deficit in the country.
The housing programme, which targets to build 200,000 units per year, is estimated to employ more than 250,000 Kenyans.
The programme has already completed several units with others in progress, employing more youth in different departments as masons and architects.
