Interview with a naming expert
In an exclusive interview with TUKO.co.ke, M. Keith Claybrook, Jr., Ph.D., an associate professor of Africana Studies at California State University, Long Beach, discussed factors behind the creation of nicknames in Black communities and how they reflect identity and culture.
Q: As an Associate Professor of Africana Studies, what factors contribute most significantly to the creation of names and nicknames in Black communities, particularly in urban or 'hood' settings?
Society and environment influence culture, while culture also influences society and environment. In "urban" or "hood" settings, often as a result of several types of factors such often including race, class, and gender, nicknames (family nicknames for kids) are used to provide a level of cuteness and joy in otherwise bleak conditions.
Q: From a historical perspective, how have naming practices in Black communities evolved to embrace humour and playfulness, particularly under the influence of pop culture, music and social media?
Nicknames in the context of popular culture can be viewed in the context of making the invisible visible. In a broad societal context, Black people are invisible unless they are seen as a problem or as an entertainer, which includes athletes, comedians, social media influencers, singers, rappers, actors and actresses, etc. Their name, even nicknames, tells society and the world, "I'm here and I am somebody!" In this sense, the best nicknames are the memorable and unique nicknames. The nickname becomes a brand where the individual can create a public-facing image from which to be remembered.
Q: What do you think names and nicknames reveal about the relationships, identity, values, or lived experiences within Black urban environments?
The names and nicknames reveal creativity and joy. Despite and in spite of urban conditions, Black people find ways to express their humanity and creativity even when living within "the belly of the beast."
Q: Why does nicknaming remain a powerful and lasting part of identity formation across many communities, not just within Black communities?
Human beings are creative creatures. The ever-increasing cultural value of individuality, even hyper-individuality, requires human creativity to reflect and serve individual interests and purpose. Names and nicknames are very personal and are at the centre of people's identities.
Q: As a scholar, what advice would you give to someone creating a nickname inspired by Black community naming traditions to help them celebrate cultural authenticity?
Names and nicknames should be reaffirming and provide guidance. In this way, every time the person's name is being called, they are being guided or reaffirmed. We must guard against reproducing stereotypes or normalizing self-degradation in our names. So, we should pay attention to the power of names; the power of words.
Final word
Nicknames starting with M have a special touch to them. They are particularly amazing if your real name starts with the letter M or if you are attached to that letter. Think of someone's personality and what they love, and it will be easier to settle for a cool nickname.
