What caused Nairobi-Naivasha highway accident?

According to a report by TV47, the accident occurred after the lorry, which was transporting 40,000 litres of diesel, experienced brake failure.

"It was around 11, and a truck was involved in an accident. It was ferrying fuel to Malaba, Uganda, when things took a tragic turn. We lost one driver," one eyewitness said.

For some, the accident was seemingly a blessing in disguise, as they rushed towards the scene not to help the victims but rather to fetch the diesel coming from the lorry.

The residents took turns to fetch the diesel one after the other, without considering the danger they were exposing themselves to.

"We are counting a huge loss, as around half of it was spilt. The residents also scrambled to fetch some.

The residents of the area called on the government to expand the highway so as to reduce the number of accidents that happen.

CS Davis Chirchir introduces ways to curb accidents

Following the increased number of road accidents in the country, the Transport Cabinet Secretary, Davis Chirchir, who appeared before parliament, announced new strategies that would be used to reduce accidents in the country.

He said that his ministry would introduce places where long-distance drivers would rest in a bid to reduce accidents that are caused by fatigue.

"We have situations where drivers are driving for more hours than would otherwise be the case. We want to employ telematics so that most of the lorries will have an observation system within the driver's cabin," Chirchir said.
"We want to introduce resting places for lorries along the highways because we do appreciate that sometimes that if there is a parking space to park, but if there is no you end up pushing yourself," he added.
