A young man has become a testament to resilience, hard work, and hope for his family after graduating from Kenyatta University (KU) against all odds.

Oscar Yier Agiso was among the 57 students travelling to Mombasa for an academic trip when they were involved in a tragic accident.

The crash claimed the lives of 10 students on the spot, while one more later succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at a health facility in Voi.

Why is Oscar Agiso wheelchair-bound?

Many, including Oscar, sustained life-altering injuries but lived to tell the tale of the horrific accident.

Following the tragedy, Oscar became wheelchair-bound. However, this did not dim his desire to learn and complete his studies.

He made his family proud by graduating during KU’s 57th graduation ceremony held on 18 July 2025 at the university’s graduation square.

Among those who celebrated him was Agumba K’agumba, who was his teacher back in high school.

In a heartfelt post on TikTok, Agumba described the young graduate as a living testimony that there is a God of second chances.

“This is Oscar Yier Agiso. Oscar was my student at Ramba Boys High School back in 2017. Now, I'm stopping it there. What makes me happy is that despite all this, God has seen him through, and even while in a wheelchair, he has graduated. Help me congratulate, among other students of mine, Oscar Agiso. Congratulations, Agiso – all the best in your endeavours, bro,” he said.

In related news, TUKO.co.ke reported that following the March 18, 2024 accident, Kenyatta University management suspended learning for three days.

The institution’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Waceke Wanjohi, said in a statement that the suspension was intended to honour the students who perished in the road crash.

Students, parents, and Kenyans from various parts of the country sent messages of condolence to the families who lost their loved ones.
