He was both the captain and check pilot on the Cessna Citation XLS and the Pilatus PC‐12 owing to his vast experience.

"He amassed over 10,000 flight hours. He led every mission with calm precision, unwavering commitment to safety, and the highest standard of airmanship," the company shared.

Another pilot on board the ill-fated plane en route to Hargeisa, Somalia, was Captain Brian Kimani Miaro.

Unlike his colleague Muthuka, Kimani had been in the company for only three years and nine months.

However, he was still an integral member, serving as an accomplished instructor captain on the Pilatus PC‐12.

AMREF CEO mourns staff killed in crash

In a moving Facebook post, the AMREF Chief Executive Officer, Githinji Gitahi, mourned the staff members who died in the Thursday plane crash.

"On 7th August, my birthday, we were visited by a tragedy of unimaginable proportions. Launched on 7th August 1957 (yes, same date!), @AMREFFlyingDocs has focused on the mission of saving lives through our flying doctors service - safely, reliably," he said.

He disclosed that it was the first time that the organisation had been hit by such a tragedy, which saw them lose four of their dear members.

"So suddenly, not even the service they have so professionally carried out for years of saving the lives of others was of use to them," he added.

He said that they were headed for Hargeisa (Somaliland) to save the life of a critically ill child, but death became their destiny, taking with them two other lives in Mwihoko.
