Murimi penned a moving poem as she recalled the last moments with Wairimu, whom she described as a bright girl.
"On Wednesday you breathed your last. I'm still held up in the past. Beautiful memories we shared, now death has dared. My heart is hurt, in disbelief I watch. Your smile, top notch ☺️ Good-hearted, death has taken.
"I watched you fight to the tee, you gave us hope, and we believed in it. In excruciating pain, you smiled anyway. Now you have flown away. A beautiful, scented rose from the orchard has been plucked. My rose that brightened me up. How I wish it could be a prank," she wrote.
How did Murimi meet Wairimu, form friendship?
Murimi told TUKO.co.ke how she met Emelda a few years ago, saying it was a God-ordained encounter.
"It was during the national exams period. I had been assigned supervision duties at a school in South B, a private school. Then, fortunately or unfortunately, my letter was revoked and I was reassigned to St Bakhita School along Enterprise Road. My efforts to return to my former supervision area were futile. Little did I know that God wanted to connect me with Wairimu. While there, I was informed of a very sick girl. The doctors had advised that she shouldn't sit for the exam, but the girl insisted, and the mother and school eventually allowed her to.

"She was very, very sick and unable to walk. As the supervisor, with the help of her mother, we would wheel her to the washroom and back. I had to keep an eye on her, give her extra time since she was feeble and in pain, and file a special report to KNEC. She managed, but it wasn’t an easy journey. From there, I became close to her mother, who shared with me her daughter’s journey," she shared.
When did Wairimu fall sick?
Wairimu had been battling rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare type of cancer that starts as a growth of cells in soft tissue, according to the Mayo Clinic, since July 2023.
Murimi emotionally recounted the little girl's last words, days before she passed away in her mother’s arms.
"She told me, 'God bless you, teacher.' She was a darling, and I will never forget her," said Murimi, a teacher at Our Lady of Mercy Primary School.
