A report by Oxfam International raised alarm over Africa’s deepening inequality crisis, revealing that the continent’s four richest men, Aliko Dangote, Johann Rupert, Nicky Oppenheimer, and Nassef Sawiris, now hold more wealth than half of Africa’s 1.5 billion people combined.
The report indicated that since 2020, the richest 1% in Africa have seen their income grow five times faster than the bottom 50%, while billionaires’ wealth has surged by 56% in five years.
Oxfam observed that despite these extremes, African governments are among the least committed globally to reducing inequality and attributed the widening gap to elite-serving policies.
Oxfam warned that Africa’s wealth is not missing but is being siphoned by a rigged system that continues to deny basic services to the majority while enriching a tiny elite.
