On Monday, June 30, Director of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Mohammed Amin held a press briefing at the agency's headquarters in Nairobi.

He addressed the growing concerns surrounding former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua’s recent public outbursts and the mysterious disappearance of a tech-savvy blogger.

Can DCI arrest Gachagua?

Amin firmly rejected claims that the DCI had summoned Gachagua over his remarks, terming the reports false and misleading.

He clarified that no such summons had been issued, and urged the public to disregard information circulating online and in some news outlets.

Despite the denial, the DCI chief issued a stern reminder that Gachagua is not above the law.

He made it clear that if investigations prove the former deputy president has been involved in any criminal conduct, appropriate legal action will follow.

"Gachagua does not enjoy any immunity against prosecution. He is subject to the laws of the land. If he is found to have been involved in any criminal activity, then appropriate action will be taken against him," Amin said.

He reiterated that investigations are still ongoing and assured the public that no individual, regardless of their political standing, would be spared if found culpable.

What did DCI say about missing blogger Ndiangui Kinyagia?

Turning to another matter that has stirred public debate, Amin addressed the disappearance of blogger and IT expert Ndiangui Kinyagia.

This followed a High Court order demanding either his release or a credible explanation from law enforcement.

Amin stated that Ndiangui was not in police custody and asked the missing blogger to voluntarily report to the nearest police station.

The DCI believes Ndiangui is a person of interest in connection with a viral post that surfaced before the June 25 protests.

The post, styled to resemble an official government memo, allegedly contained a mock protest itinerary and was flagged for its potentially inflammatory content.

The DCI boss said he is ready to appear before court as required, insisting that the agency had no role in the blogger’s disappearance.

TUKO.co.ke earlier reported that Gachagua distanced himself from claims linking him to the June 25 protests, which were organised largely by Kenyan youth under the Gen Z banner.

The demonstrations were held in honour of victims of the 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests and spread across more than 24 counties.

Gachagua said he chose to remain at home on the protest day. He explained that Gen Z had previously asked politicians to stay out of their movement, and he respected that call to avoid politicising the demonstrations.
