The Kisii county has been thrown into mourning following the death of Bishop Emeritus Josiah Onyancha and his wife, Hellen Onyancha.

Onyancha, who vied for the Kisii gubernatorial seat during the 2022 General Election, died alongside his wife following a road accident along the Kisii-Narok Highway.

According to their son, the couple was travelling to Nairobi to attend his graduation when tragedy struck.

They began their journey on Wednesday, August 6, to make it on time for the graduation ceremony at the Mt. Kenya University that was slated for Friday, August 8.

Onyancha was the father of renowned journalist Edwin Nyarangi.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Bishop Josiah was the overseer and the director of the Association of Evangelical Gospel Assemblies.

Josiah held a PHD in Library and Information Science from the University of Zululand in South Africa.

UDA senator mourns Bishop Onyancha

UDA's nominated senator, Esther Anyieni Okenyuri, was one of the leaders who paid an emotional tribute to the clergyman and his wife.

She expressed the grief she was in as she termed Onyancha as a dedicated servant of God whose life was characterised by humility.

"It is with a lot of sorrow that I have learnt of the passing on of Bishop Emeritus Rev. Dr Josiah Onyancha and his wife Hellen through a road accident along Kisii Narok Highway. Words cannot adequately define the shock and grief we feel as a community following this devastating loss," she said.

"His ministry positively impacted many people in society. His wife acted as a pillar of strength and never relented in building a family founded on togetherness and love," she added.

UDA politician dies in grisly accident

This comes months after Nyandarua Member of County Assembly Beth Wahito died in a grisly accident along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

The accident occurred when her car collided with a Guardian Angel bus on Sunday, June 22.

Before her death, the politician posted in Kikuyu that she was going to the forest. The news of her untimely death saddened many.

Her leadership had spanned over three decades, a clear show of resilience at a time when women hardly occupied political seats.

The politician was known by residents of her ward for her courageous, unwavering dedication and tireless efforts to assist the less fortunate in society.

The deceased occupied various leadership roles, including the Democratic Party and the NARC-Kenya parties, where she served in the capacity of the Nyandarua county chairperson.
