Funny Moment as Scared Gen Z Protester Hides Inside Dustbin, Lights Candle

Nairobi: A man who went to the Nairobi CBD to take part in the remembrance of the youngsters who were killed in demos against the Finance Bill 2024 was forced to hide in a dustbin.

On June 25, 2025, young people drawn from various corners of Nairobi descended into the city to take part in protests aimed at honouring the slain victims.

Initially, the demos were peaceful, with youths dancing and chanting slogans at the top of their voices. At some point, they even interacted with policemen, took photos, and made jokes.

What happened when demos escalated?

By mid-morning, huge crowds had poured into the city, and the situation changed; there were running battles, teargas attacks, and several people were left nursing gunshot wounds.

At some point, a policewoman was badly beaten and left bleeding profusely.

After watching everything unravel before him, the young man, scared, jumped into a nearby dustbin and shared his complaints from there.

He lit the candle that he had carried to honour his comrades, which many saw as defeating the purpose of hiding in the first place, since it would draw unwanted attention to him.

"A protester hiding inside a dustbin around Agha Khan Walk, Nairobi, lights a candle as he expresses his frustrations following running battles between them and police," read the caption.
"Our people were killed, and we are afraid...so afraid to even venture out. That is why I came out with one candle to cry. Please don't bring goons to town," he said.
