Daily Monitor reports that Ajuna, already a mother to a young boy, had been navigating life alone after separating from her husband due to ongoing disputes.

Why Ajuna sought local solution

Shortly after the separation, she discovered she was pregnant again, but her ex-husband ignored her when she called to inform him.

Since she wanted to keep the child, Ajuna began antenatal care. But around the eighth month, she started feeling contractions.

Lacking both financial support and someone to accompany her to a hospital, she turned to a local traditional birth attendant, a figure often relied on in rural communities where healthcare services are inaccessible or unaffordable.

“I went to her home in the early hours of Monday morning. I was in pain and hoped she could help me deliver. But the entire day passed with no progress,” she recounted.

How Ajuna's newborn baby died

By 6 pm., the birth attendant advised her to seek medical attention. However, by that time, Ajuna noted that the contractions had subsided.

She was rushed to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital, where an ultrasound delivered devastating news: her unborn child had died in the womb.

“The doctors took my blood samples and told me to rest until 8 am. when they could operate. It was the most painful and terrifying experience of my life,” she recalled tearfully.

The tragedy deepened when doctors discovered she had suffered a uterine rupture, a rare but serious complication, and later developed a fistula—a condition that has left her in need of ongoing medical care.

Ajuna underwent surgery and remained hospitalised for several days to receive critical postnatal and surgical care.

She continues to attend follow-up appointments and receives regular check-ins from the hospital's medical team.

“They still call me to check on my condition. If I ever get pregnant again, I will go directly to the hospital. I will never risk my life by seeking help elsewhere,” she vowed.
