A mother from Trans Nzoia is struggling to come to terms with the untimely and painful loss of a loved one.

Irene Nekesa struggled to contain her emotions after painfully losing one of her children, Lewis Simiyu.

The mother of three found her son dead weeks after he had gone missing after she sent him to fetch water.

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Nekesa recalled her last conversation with her teenage son before he vanished.

Nekesa's last conversation with her son

“He had been sent home to rest after a football competition. He attended a boarding school, but they were released for a few days before resuming. They were scheduled to return on a Monday, but since it was a public holiday, I asked him to return on Tuesday instead.
"On the day he went missing, I sent him to the river to fetch water. It was around 10am. The river is a five to ten-minute walk from home. He carried a jerrycan and a smartphone with him. The phone had no SIM card due to poor network coverage, so it only had music, and anyone in the house could use it to listen. There was nothing unusual about him taking it,” she said, adding that she urged him to hurry so he could return and prepare for school that same day.

Unfortunately, minutes turned into hours, and there was still no sign of Simiyu, making the family increasingly anxious.

When was Simiyu's body discovered?

Nekesa went to check the river but did not find him or the jerrycan, which heightened her concern.

“I sent a message to the chief, who was dealing with personal matters as he had just lost his mother. I informed him of my son’s disappearance. I also spread the word across the village, as my son was well known. I couldn’t tell where he was or what had happened to him. I never reported the case to the police at any point,” she said.

Hours turned into days, and days into weeks, but there was still no sign of Simiyu, a Form Two student.

On Tuesday, June 17, Nekesa and her family received the devastating news that the body of her 16-year-old son had been found.

Where was Simiyu's body found?

“The body was discovered near a farm. Some residents came to pick me up from home and asked me to confirm whether it was my son. When I arrived, I saw the body. It was covered with the same sweater he had worn the day I sent him to fetch water, nearly a month earlier. He was wearing the same clothes I had last seen him in.

"My heart sank. I even fainted. He looked like he had been killed—not at that spot, though. If he had been killed there, there would have been blood on the ground. He had a broken hand and leg, as well as stab wounds. The police arrived and took the body to the mortuary,” she said.

Nekesa, who has been raising her three children single-handedly, said she has been visiting the mortuary multiple times.

When will Simiyu be laid to rest?

Due to her financial situation, she cannot afford a post-mortem to determine the cause of her son's death.

“All we want to do now is prepare for his burial. We hope to lay him to rest on Saturday, June 28. It hurts so much, but there’s barely anything we can do. His siblings have already been informed, and it's not easy for them. My family has been supportive, and many have visited to console me, for which I am grateful.

Narok student found dead after being sent home

In another story, a 17-year-old Form Three student met a tragic end after he was allegedly sent home from school without his parents being notified.

The young man from Mwongori High School died in a fatal road accident while on his way home.

He was reportedly sent home after a CCTV camera in their classroom was damaged, and no one took responsibility.

Since his parents were not informed and couldn’t send him fare, the student sought a lift from a parcel truck, which later got involved in an accident that killed him.
