When I returned home in the evening, he was nowhere to be found. Neighbours told me they saw him boarding a vehicle headed to Mbeya, Tanzania,” she said.

Who gave Evans lift and to where?

Mwapongo said she searched for her son for three days around the area, moving from one police station to another.

When her efforts bore no fruit, she decided to travel to another town in the hope of finding leads.

“I went to a general hospital where I was told Evans had been seen but had left a couple of days earlier. I was informed he had asked for a lift from a lorry driver who was going to Mbeya.
I then went to the lorry parking lot and showed drivers a photo of my son. Some confirmed that he had indeed been given a lift, but they refused to disclose the company that owned the lorry,” she said.

How old is Mwapongo's son?

The heartbroken mother also recalled a conversation she had with her son which may have contributed to his disappearance.

Mwapongo shared that she had separated from her husband, and they barely communicated anymore, as he had moved on with his life.

“I told my son I would take him to his father, but he didn’t want to go. He said if I tried, he would run away. He told me he was old enough to run away if he wanted,” Mwapongo recalled.

She added that her son, 10, was in Grade 5 and that she had reached out to several media stations to highlight his disappearance.
