A 30-year-old woman from Nairobi has shared the devastating story of how her ex-husband asked for part of the dowry he paid to be returned.

Tabitha Nafula revealed that she met her now ex-husband, Mark (not his real name), in church through a mutual friend.
“I had always wanted a spiritual man who knows God and is active in church. So when I met Mark and decided he was the one, I told my mum. He was an usher at our church at the time,” she shared.
According to the mother of one, Mark was a very quiet person and barely spoke during their four-month courtship.

“I didn’t know he was a hypocrite. I was in love, excited to be with him, and even took our relationship to the pastor. To me, he was my Mr Right,” she narrated.
Nafula noted that they officially began dating in August and got married in December.

How much did Nafula’s hubby pay as dowry?
In love and excited to have found a God-fearing man, the 30-year-old woman said they began planning for their traditional wedding.
She recounted that Mark and his family visited her home in Zimmerman, where she lived with her beloved mother, to officially ask for her hand in marriage.
“Considering how much she had struggled raising me alone after separating from my dad, my mother was finally happy that I had found someone and gave us her blessing,” Nafula said.
The mother of one revealed that her husband paid KSh 10,000 as dowry to her mother.
Why did Nairobi man ask for dowry back?
However, sometime later, her husband asked her to request her mother to return KSh 6,000 so he could start a business.
“That’s where I feel I let my mother down. My guy, now ex-husband, sent me to my mum to ask if she could lend us KSh 6,000 to design and print invitation cards for the pre-wedding, and she did. In short, my dowry was KSh 4,000,” she stated.
They eventually got married in church and began living together as husband and wife.
Nafula shared that despite living with the man for four years, he never refunded her mother the KSh 6,000 that had been part of her dowry.

Tabitha's story left many Kenyans with divided opinions, with the majority agreeing that she should have never proceeded with the marriage after the dowry ceremony due to the man's conduct.

Why did TikToker pay only KSh 14k dowry?
In other news, TUKO.co.ke reported that a man on TikTok sparked mixed reactions online after announcing that he only paid KSh 14,000 as dowry for his wife.
He explained how he managed to pay such a small amount compared to many who are burdened by the ridiculously high bride prices demanded by some families.
