During an interview on Citizen TV on Thursday, April 24, Wambua argued that the former vice president is the only opposition politician capable of defeating Ruto.

Can Kalonzo Musyoka defeat William Ruto?

Wambua, a close ally of the Wiper leader, stated that Kalonzo's massive countrywide support gives him a better chance to deny Ruto a second term compared to other opposition politicians.

"If there is a leader in Kenya who can send Ruto home in 2027, it is Kalonzo," Wambua said.

While insisting that Kalonzo will be on the ballot in the 2027 presidential election, Wambua narrated how the former vice president sacrificed his ambition to support other candidates in the past.

He gave an example of 2022, arguing that Kalonzo's supporters overwhelmingly voted for ODM leader Raila Odinga despite the Wiper leader not being a running mate.

"For the longest time Kalonzo has been supporting other presidential candidates. Even in the 2022 elections, he was not a running mate, but his loyal supporters supported Raila Odinga and voted in bigger numbers than what he got from Nyanza," the Kitui senator said.

Will Fred Matiang vie in 2027?

The Wiper legislator stated that Kalonzo's presidential ambitions remain despite his alliances with other leading opposition figures.

The opposition has publicly indicated that they would form a government in the 2027 election.

Recently, DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa hinted at teaming up with former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i.

According to Wamalwa, the opposition team, which also includes former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, is determined to make Ruto a one-term president.

Why Kalonzo should not bank on Uhuru

In other developments, Saboti MP Caleb Amisi advised Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka not to place too much trust in votes from the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Through a tweet, Amisi warned that relying on former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s backing could prove futile.

He pointed out that Uhuru was unable to secure a win for Raila in 2022, suggesting he would be even less likely to deliver a victory for Kalonzo in the next race.

Amisi further cautioned politicians against capitalising on the troubles facing impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, saying they could be in for a rude shock come 2027.

The ODM lawmaker predicted that Mt Kenya will front its own presidential candidate and hinted that several Kenya Kwanza-affiliated leaders might abandon the ruling coalition ahead of the polls.
