Opposition leaders, led by former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, have reiterated that their coalition will unite behind a single presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto.

Speaking during an interview with NTV Kenya on Monday, May 5, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka suggested that the main contenders from the opposition camp are likely to be former Interior Cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

Why is the Matiang'i-Kalonzo ticket the best pick?

Onyonka expressed strong confidence in both leaders, citing Kalonzo’s vast political experience across four administrations: those of late presidents Daniel Moi, Mwai Kibaki, retired president Uhuru Kenyatta, and ODM leader Raila Odinga as prime minister.

He emphasised that either of the two would be capable of steering the country in the right direction.

“If Kalonzo becomes the president, I will sleep well. The front-runners are either Kalonzo and Matiang’i or Matiang’i and Kalonzo. That is where we are,” Onyonka said, affirming the opposition's collective goal to correct past mistakes and rebuild the nation.

The Kisii senator admitted that Matiang’i mishandled Miguna Miguna's deportation, stating that Miguna deserves an apology.

However, Onyonka argued that the incident should not disqualify Matiang’i from seeking the presidency.

He noted that while no leader is without fault, Matiang’i’s overall record remains stronger than most contenders.

Further, Onyonka has acknowledged Raila’s significant contributions to the country’s political journey, stating that his legacy is undeniable. However, Onyonka noted that even the best players must know when to exit the stage.

The ODM senator defended his decision to align with Matiang’i, criticising Raila’s recent move to collaborate with Ruto. He emphasised the need for fresh leadership and a new direction within the opposition.

Onyonka also touched on his political future, stating he is content with his current role as senator but would not rule out running for a gubernatorial seat if called upon by the people.
