Speaking in Limuru, on Thursday, July 24, Kawanjiru boldly hit out at the head of state, asking him not to go after him, his family or friends.

"I am standing on the soil that I was born on, William Ruto. Leave me alone, I am a young man. Gachagua has defeated you; now you're coming after children," Kawanjiru said.

Is Peter Kawanjiru's life in danger?

Hinting that he may be targeted, the DCP youth leader claimed that the president should be held liable if anything bad happened to him.

"I will tell you the truth while at my home, if anything happens to me, or my family or my relatives or close friends of mine. Don't look for somebody else, it is William Samoei Ruto," he said.

He further condemned Ruto's remarks, which called on parents to take their parenting roles seriously.

The head of state claimed that parents failing to carry out their roles contributed to tensions between youth and law enforcement.

The president's remarks came at the height of increased tensions between the police and the youth during the Saba Saba and June 2 Gen Z anniversary protests.

Ruto's words seemingly didn't sit right with Kawanjiru, who defended Kenyan parents, stating that they managed to raise brave youth who can be able to fight for their rights.

"My mum has a business here in the marketplace. I heard him speaking in church, saying that parents do not know how to take care of their children. They have raised us well; that is why we are very confident," Kawanjiru added.

Was Peter Kawanjiru charged?

Kawanjiru's remarks come days after he was charged with terrorism following an alleged coordinated attack on government offices during the June 25 unrest in Kiambu.

The youth leader was arrested alongside Serah Wanjiku Thiga following chaotic protests that resulted in the burning down of various government facilities.

They were arraigned and charged at the Kahawa Law Courts on Monday, July 7. Court documents showed that the two, alongside others who were not present in court, allegedly orchestrated the act between 11 pm and 12 pm.

The offices that were targeted included the Kikuyu Law Courts, the Chief's office, the Kikuyu Probation Offices, Sub-County Administration Offices, Registrar of Persons Office, among others.

Authorities did not rule out the possibility of making additional arrests as the investigations continued.
