The tragic killing sent shockwaves across the region and left a leadership vacuum that several hopefuls are now seeking to fill—including the late MP's son, Boyd Were Ong'ondo.
Boyd, aged 27, officially declared his intention to succeed his father, joining a growing list of aspirants that includes politician Philip Aroko, humanitarian and philanthropist Newton Ogada, and Robert Ajwang’, popularly known as Money Bior.
Who is Boyd Were?
Born on April 22, 1998, Boyd is widely viewed as a promising young leader with a strong background in finance and a legacy of public service.
Raised in a politically active household, Boyd grew up observing his father’s service to the people of Kasipul, shaping his understanding of what it means to lead with integrity and purpose.
Inspired by his father's dedication to the people of Kasipul, Boyd has committed himself to continuing the work his father began—this time, through elected office.
Currently serving at the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Boyd began his professional journey in 2021, where he has been involved in strengthening Kenya’s economic systems through taxation and policy implementation.

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, the young politician revealed that his early education began at Kanyakine Boys Boarding Primary School before proceeding to St. Patrick’s High School, G-Senior, where he cultivated leadership qualities and a strong sense of civic responsibility.

Boyd holds a Bachelor of Science in Finance from the Cooperative University of Kenya, and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Commerce (Finance and Investment) at KCA University.

As the son of the late MP Were, Boyd seeks to not only preserve his father's legacy but also to modernise and deepen its impact.

Will ODM support Boyd Were?
Meanwhile, following the murder of Were, some ODM leaders signalled a strong preference for the vacant seat to remain within the late legislator’s family.
Leaders, including Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma and Kasipul ODM branch chair Evans Ndege, dismissed potential challengers outside the family, maintaining that the party is focused on preserving the late MP’s legacy through one of his sons or wives.
Sources close to the party have also hinted at plans to front Boyd as ODM’s preferred candidate for the upcoming by-election.
The move is reportedly aimed at continuing the late MP’s development agenda and maintaining political stability in the constituency.
