They used the gathering to emphasise peace, stability, and cohesion at a time when political activity is beginning to heat up ahead of the 2027 General Election.

"We have all come together to read this statement, to demonstrate our unity and support for the government of William Samoei Arap Ruto, and to declare ‘two terms, ten years without a break,’" the elders said, underlining their pledge to stand firmly by the president.

The Akorino faith, known for its strict adherence to religious doctrines and visible attire, has a significant following in Kenya, particularly in the Rift Valley, Mt Kenya, and Western regions.

Their public backing of Ruto is expected to carry considerable weight among its followers, many of whom actively participate in community initiatives.

The gathering in Nakuru was characterised by various activities that included a series of solemn prayers for peace, unity, and national stability.

Why are Akorino backing Ruto?

The Akorino leaders praised Ruto's administration, arguing that he had fulfilled several campaign promises and promoted national unity.

They further noted that his administration had worked to bring together communities under challenging circumstances.

"His Excellency the President has made and honoured several promises. His Excellency has, under very challenging circumstances, brought all Kenyan communities together," they stated.

The church elders were also critical of early political campaigns by other politicians, arguing that such activities distract the nation from key developmental priorities.

"Those other words people are saying, when the time comes, people will show up. But for now, let’s unite and support the government," the leaders said, emphasising that national progress should take precedence over politicking.

They underscored the centrality of government in defining Kenya as a nation, arguing that without a central authority, Kenya ceases to be a state.

"Without a government, we can’t really say we have a country. Our country, Kenya, is called a country because we have a government. And this is a government of justice," they added.
