For a typical football fan, it is always the hope that kills. But for some fans, it’s less hope and more hallucination.

Every season, they believe it’s their year. Spoiler alert: it never is. A new survey has revealed which Premier League fans are the most delusional — and it’s gloriously painful, or interesting, depending on which side of the divide you are on.

Most delusional fan bases in the Premier League

Think of your friend and the club they support. Which club do you think is at the top when it comes to unrealistic expectations?

The survey, done by FreeBets, ranked the most delusional fan bases in the Premier League.

5. Liverpool - delusion rating: 6.53%

Well, not even their most recent Premier League title, the joint-most in English history, has excluded the Reds from this list.

Arne Slot's brilliant start to life in England had many fans they would win the quadruple, only for their title charge in the cup competitions to collapse dramatically.

The same had been said and widely sung in Jurgen Klopp's final season, but the German only ended with the Carabao Cup to show for.

Trent Alexander-Arnold's unceremonious exit has also been discussed widely, with many fans of the opinion that the fullback was supposed to stay in Merseyside because he is a local lad.

4. Chelsea - delusion rating: 6.72%

Chelsea's success came in the glorious Roman Abramovich era, but after the Russian was forced out, the fans have been left reminiscing about the good old days.

Abramovich set the standard so high that any sign of flakiness was instantly punished by instant dismissal of the manager.

The new ownership has equally splashed money on players like Abramovich, although with a different strategy. Rather than bring already established players, Chelsea is now signing 'stars for the future', but with no success yet.

However, the fans are still hopeful of their yesteryears, but the line between hope and delusion is a thin one.

3. Tottenham Hotspur - delusion rating: 7.49%

It would be interesting to know the results of the survey after Tottenham won the Europa League on May 21, 2025.

Spurs beat Manchester United to end their 17-year trophy drought. Yes, the title in itself was a huge achievement, but for a 'Big Six' club to go for that long without a trophy is where the problem is.

The emergence of Aston Villa and Newcastle United has prompted fans to ask whether or not they deserve the Big Six tag. They might have won the Europa League, but with a 17th-place finish, it's time a couple of things are reconsidered.

2. Manchester United - delusion rating: 16.31%

Manchester United have fallen so hard since the glory days of Sir Alex Ferguson, as they continue to hit new lows every season.

The failure to win the Europa League ended their chance at slight redemption, and looking forward, the future is still very bleak.

The Red Devils arguably have the biggest fan base in the world, and what they have struggled with is reconciling Ferguson's days and their new normal.

Old Trafford is no longer the fortress it once was, despite the club spending a lot of money on top players, including a comeback for Cristiano Ronaldo, which didn't end well.

1. Arsenal - delusion rating: 24.76%

Nothing perfectly explains Arsenal's position here than Patrice Evra's famous line: "Watching Arsenal is like watching Netflix, you always wait for the next season".

Arsenal finished another season without a trophy, extending Mikel Arteta's barren run to five years. Their Premier League drought is even longer as they haven't won the top-flight title since the 2004 Invincibles.

The Gunners have also never won the Champions League despite being one of the most established clubs in world football.

The fans are always constantly hopeful for next season, blaming the referees and coming up with other conspiracies. Arteta's sentiments also don't help when he starts talking about how they are the best team in Europe, but the results on the pitch say something different.

Arsenal bosses make Mikel Arteta's sack decision

TUKO.co.ke has also reported on what Arsenal bosses think of Mikel Arteta after the Champions League elimination at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain.

The semi-final exit came as yet another disappointment to a side that hasn't won a major title in five seasons.

Arteta promised Arsenal fans success in his address to the fans after their final home game of the season.
