Rose said her daughter came back shortly after visiting the bathroom, and they noticed blood on her legs. When asked about the baby, she remained silent.
The hospital administrator reported the incident to the local village chairperson, who alerted the police. The officers arrived with a fire brigade to help retrieve the baby from the latrine.
With the help of residents, the fire brigade broke open the pit latrine and found the newborn alive inside.
Busoga East Police spokesperson Michael Kafayo confirmed the incident, noting that the baby was retrieved from the 50-foot-deep pit latrine.
He said the newborn was found covered in human waste, with maggots entering its ears, mouth, and other parts of the body.
According to the Daily Monitor, the mother and baby were referred to Ivukula Health Centre III for medical attention.
Bella was later arrested but released on police bond to allow her to breastfeed the child. She is currently facing charges of attempted infanticide.

Reactions from the public
Some netizens blamed postpartum depression and the young mother’s age, while others condemned her actions and called for both the nurse and the responsible man to be held accountable.
Mukimba Sophy Winfred:
"Eh, I don't want to be judgmental, but she should have left the baby by the roadside because life is sacred. Bambi, life is full of irony—many people are longing for children. Infertility is on the rise these days, according to medical reports, and yet someone dumps a baby in a toilet."
Nassuna Bushirah:
"Postpartum depression at a young age can be difficult to deal with. May the good Lord forgive her."
Lwanga Nelson:
"The nurse should be arrested. Midwives know that women in labour are cautioned against going to latrines, and it is their duty to monitor such patients. They know that labour often induces the urge to excrete."
